Consultant Respiratory Physician job at Barts Health NHS Trust
A new post of Consultant Respiratory Physician specializing in asthma and severe asthma has been created at Barts Health NHS Trust. In North Central and North East London, severe asthma care is provided through a Hub-and Spoke network (North Central and East London Severe Asthma Service) including St Bartholomew’s Hospital, as the mandated center, is the hub. We provide expert coordinated care to area patients with difficult to control asthma, with detailed patient assessments leading to specialized therapies targeted to improve asthma control for our patients. We have a large MDT including 3 existing consultants, 4 specialist nurses, 2 pharmacists, a speech therapist, an ENT surgeon, a dietician, a physiotherapist and a psychologist
Main duties of the position
Outpatient clinics, virtual reviews, multidisciplinary meetings and inpatient rounds of patients with difficult and severe asthma at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
General Asthma and Respiratory Medicine Outpatient Clinics at Newham University Hospital.
Inpatient and on-call visits to Respiratory and General Medicine at Newham University Hospital.
Provide clinical leadership in the management of acute asthma admissions across the Trust, including contributing to guideline development, training of multidisciplinary colleagues, leading/supervising NACAP (Asthma ); and developing links with primary care in local CCGs.
Assist the Severe Asthma Service Manager with supervision and professional appointments within the Severe Asthma Service.

Ongoing responsibility for patient care under his/her care, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
Leadership, development and organization of the services for which he is responsible in accordance with the business plans of the trusts. Liaison and communication with relevant Clinical Directors, General Managers and General Managers at the sites where the incumbent works.
Development of own interests and sub-specialties, including active participation in research programs.
Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of physicians-in-training, including approving and monitoring on-call rotations and locum appointments.
Provide evidence-based care to all inpatients and outpatients.
Comply with clinical and quality standards at all times.
Liaise effectively and in a timely manner with GPs, Community Services and all healthcare agencies and work collaboratively in East London as required.
Maintain and promote teamwork and multidisciplinary work in other relevant specialties, in close collaboration with consulting medical staff.
Participate fully in the management of departments and liaise closely with general managers and clinical directors.
Play an active role in teaching and training within the department and trust at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- GMC Registration
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- CCT in Respiratory Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine, G(I)M, (or within 6 months of eligibility at time of interview) or be on the Specialist Register
- Evidence of general training in respiratory and general medicine.
- Severe Asthma experience in a recognized specialized center.
- At least one year of experience at a senior level in a Severe Asthma specialist unit
- Experience with laryngeal dysfunction, breathing pattern disturbances, and complex shortness of breath
