Mario Kart 9 in active development, says industry consultant • Eurogamer.net
And comes with a “new twist”.
Mario Kart 9 is now in “active development” within Nintendo, according to Tokyo-based industry consultant Dr Serkan Toto.
The continued sales success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had left many fans wondering if Nintendo was still planning an all-new Mario Kart for Nintendo Switch – or if the platform would just end up with its wildly popular Wii U port.
Writing on GamesIndustry.biz, Toto said Mario Kart 9 will include “a new twist” and could be ready to show off this year.
Previous gimmicks in Mario Kart games included dual racers (Double Dash!!), the introduction of motion controls (MK Wii), as well as glide (MK7) and anti-gravity (MK8) sections.
Last year, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe officially overtook Mario Kart Wii to become the best-selling game in the series, with 38.74 million copies moved.
And then it kept selling. Over the Black Friday weekend of 2021, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe was the UK’s best-selling boxed game, thanks to its inclusion in Nintendo Switch hardware bundles.
Even on a normal week, the runner is consistently included in the UK’s top 10 physical games – more than six years after its original release for Wii U was originally launched.
This continued commercial success, coupled with the fact that Nintendo has never released two mainline Mario Kart games on the same generation of consoles before, has led some to wonder if Mario Kart 9 could still be many years away.
