Respiratory Medicine Adjunct Consultant Employment with Swansea Bay University Health Board

Applications are invited for a locum consultant in respiratory and general medicine (preferably with a sub-specialist in non-invasive ventilation and sleep medicine) at Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) based at Morriston Hospital, Swansea. This position is offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

SBUHB provides services to around 600,000 people, primarily serving the populations of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. Morriston Hospital is a 750-bed teaching hospital and tertiary referral center which houses Swansea and Neath Port Talbot’s main accident and emergency department. It is recognized as South West Wales’ major trauma unit and is the regional cardiothoracic centre, providing a full range of cardiac and thoracic surgery. In early 2018, the Commissioners announced plans to consolidate a single Thoracic Surgery service for South Wales at the Morriston Hospital site from its current two-site arrangement. Morriston Hospital is also a tertiary center for renal medicine, neuroscience, oral and maxillofacial surgery, the Welsh Center for Burns and Plastic Surgery, and bariatric surgery. Rheumatology and palliative medicine are also provided in a large catchment area. These services are supported by critical care facilities, including a 28-bed general and HDU ITU and a range of specialist beds.

Alternate consultant pulmonologist

This is a 10 PA locum position in the Respiratory/General Medicine Department which covers Swansea and Neath/Port Talbot Delivery Units in SBUHB. The successful candidate will be based at Morriston Hospital and join a team of eight full-time colleagues and two academics who work together at Morriston, Singleton and Neath Port Talbot hospitals. He/she will join five respiratory physicians and 22 colleagues in other medical specialties, who together support acute general practice admission at Morriston. Access to mentorship tailored to your personal needs will be coordinated. Administrative and secretarial support will be provided.

This position was created for:

  • Support the sleep service across Swansea and Neath/Port Talbot.
  • Extending the respiratory team’s contribution to acute respiratory medicine at Morriston Hospital.
  • Developing the interventional bronchoscopy service in Swansea.

The Morriston Hospital Respiratory Unit provides a referral service for the diagnosis and management of a wide range of respiratory conditions. The unit has a strong teamwork ethic and maintains close working relationships with colleagues in thoracic surgery, radiology and histopathology. Specialized bronchoscopy techniques (EBUS, stent insertion, cryotherapy, etc.) are performed on the weekly bronchoscopy checklist at Morriston.

The respiratory clinics and endoscopy department are housed in an ambulatory care block with pulmonary function, radiology, and phlebotomy departments nearby, facilitating a “one-stop-shop” service for many patients. The pulmonary function laboratory is well equipped with two body boxes, a dosimeter for bronchial provocation tests and equipment for cardiopulmonary exercise tests. There is a full range of radiology services including CT scan, MRI, nuclear medicine and bronchial arteriography. There are also weekly radiology meetings and lung cancer MDT meetings and a monthly thoracic pathology meeting.

Suitably qualified candidates would also be encouraged to be actively involved in teaching medical students at Swansea University.
